VIABLE Lab Presents at AAAI 2025 in Philadelphia

VIABLE Lab members Shan Zhang and Chip Li presented their research at the 39th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Philadelphia, with presentations at iRAISE Workshop and EAAI Symposium.

We are excited to share that VIABLE Lab members represented our team at the 39th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI 2025) held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from February 25 to March 4, 2025.

Conference Participation

AAAI is one of the premier international conferences in artificial intelligence, bringing together researchers and practitioners from around the world to share cutting-edge research and applications. Our team contributed to two important events at the conference, showcasing our work at the intersection of AI and education.

Spotlight Paper at iRAISE Workshop
Our research paper "ARCHED" was selected as a Spotlight Paper at the Innovation and Responsibility for AI-Supported Education (iRAISE) Workshop.

Research Presentations

iRAISE Workshop: Innovation and Responsibility for AI-Supported Education

Paper: "ARCHED: A Human-Centered Framework for Transparent, Responsible, and Collaborative AI-Assisted Instructional Design"

Authors: Hongming Chip Li1, Yizirui Fang2, Shan Zhang1, Seiyon M. Lee1, Yiming Wang3, Mark Trexler2, & Anthony F. Botelho1 (1University of Florida, 2Johns Hopkins University, 3Northeastern University)

This paper introduces ARCHED, a framework that implements a structured multi-stage workflow between educators and AI for instructional design. The framework cascades instructional development into distinct stages guided by Bloom's taxonomy and enhanced by LLMs, maintaining human educators as primary decision-makers. [Spotlight Paper]

LOGEN AI Platform Research Preview

As part of our ARCHED framework research, we also unveiled a research preview of LOGEN AI (Learning Objective GENeration Artificial Intelligence), a tool that helps educators create precise, measurable, and effective learning objectives aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy. This collaborative project combines artificial intelligence with established educational frameworks to support both experienced educators and those new to instructional design.

Interested educators and researchers are welcome to try the platform and provide feedback to help us improve this educational tool. Try LOGEN AI

EAAI-25: The 15th Symposium on Educational Advances in Artificial Intelligence

Paper: "Empowering Educators in AI: Insights from Co-Designing an AI Microcredential with and for K-12 Educators"

Authors: Nicole Hutchins, Shan Zhang, Joanne Barrett and Maya Israel

This research presents valuable insights from the collaborative design of an AI microcredential program specifically tailored for K-12 educators, highlighting the importance of empowering teachers with AI literacy and skills.

Philadelphia Adventures 🔔

Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, offered more than just academic enrichment! Our visit was made even more special thanks to our team member Seiyon Lee, who calls Philadelphia home and completed her Master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Though she couldn't join us this time (we missed you, Seiyon!), she generously shared her insider knowledge of the city's best eateries and hidden gems.

During our limited free time, we explored the vibrant Chinatown with its amazing food options and authentic flavors. Shan also managed to visit the historic University of Pennsylvania campus, taking in the beautiful architecture and scholarly atmosphere of this Ivy League institution. Meanwhile, Chip took his conference duties as seriously as his culinary exploration - somehow managing to sample an impressive variety of local delicacies between presentations! His enthusiastic food reviews became our daily entertainment, with each meal apparently "the best thing I've ever eaten" (until the next meal, of course).

The conference venue in Center City provided convenient access to many local attractions, though our packed schedule meant we had to save the Liberty Bell, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and those famous "Rocky Steps" for a future visit! The city's rich history and diverse culinary scene made it the perfect backdrop for our academic endeavors. We're already looking forward to our next Philadelphia adventure - hopefully with Seiyon as our personal tour guide next time!
